ASP is preferred by many
programmers to ColdFusion, which, despite its extendibility
with VisualBasic, VisualC++ and other COM tools, is not very
popular with programmers. As Gorelov indicates, developers
who already know how to program are less likely to want to
learn a separate mark-up language such as CFML than to go
with a full-blown scripting language like ASP. “The world of
the Internet is evolving,” he says. “It’s really about
building the infrastructures that can leverage more complex
and complete technology, especially in a business
environment. As far as functionality goes, scripted
environments such as ASP and Java Server Pages give you more
flexibility in what you can do.” Ultimately, regardless of
its relative strengths, the Microsoft architecture will draw
many developers, mothlike, to its name. Even if you’re not
among the moths, however, you might prefer Microsoft
ASP/IIS/NT to another platform if you have a tight
development administration budget; if site availability is
less mission-critical than content delivery; if maximum
leverage of existing resources such as Microsoft programs,
hardware and software and libraries is desirable; or if a
single proprietary support source is strongly preferable.
It is no exaggeration to say that architecture is your
most important decision. Once you choose a foundation on
which to build your Web site, there’s no going back. We hope
we’ve presented in brief the sum of the considerations
needed to make an informed choice. The next step would be to
